The beating heart of the Black Country has a lot to offer, and with over 20 docks around the city we’ll help you navigate your way.
Molineux Stadium
It would be remiss of us to start anywhere other than the golden palace itself, the Molineux, home to the city’s famous football team Wolverhampton Wanderers. So, whether you’re visiting on a matchday, or coming midweek to visit the museum and see the silverware up close, or to take in a stadium tour – the dock on Molineux Street is well placed.
Wolverhampton Art Gallery
Wolverhampton Art Gallery is free to enter and is home to more than 300 years of art to wonder at, with fantastic changing exhibitions and permanent galleries featuring work by English landscape and portrait genius Gainsborough. A special feature within the gallery is The Wall of Heroes, a mural created by staff from The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust to celebrate International Year of the Nurse and Midwives 2020. Find docks in Victoria Street.
Please note that from June to September 2021, building works will be taking place to relocate the gallery’s café to a larger ground floor location and to create a fully inclusive entrance via St Peter’s passage. The gallery and café will remain open, but please bear in mind at times it will be noisy and some parts of the gallery will be off limits.
Grand Theatre
From the transport interchange dock, it’s a hop, skip and a jump to the Grand Theatre. Another example of stunning Victorian architecture in Wolverhampton. The intimate three-tiered auditorium receives a wide range of major touring productions including drama, musicals, ballet, dance, opera, variety, concerts, children’s shows and let’s not forget one of the biggest pantomimes in the UK too! Currently closed due to Covid but hoping to reopen soon.
Civic Halls
Cycle to Victoria Street and you can easily reach Wolves Civic. Although currently closed until 2022 due to an extensive, multi-million transformation project, we couldn’t leave Wolves without giving it a mention! One of the most iconic performance venues in the region, proud to boast the names of past performers including Queen, David Bowie, Nirvana, James Brown, Elton John, Paloma Faith, Florence + The Machine and Ed Sheeran.
The Bilash
Located in Cheapside, and opposite the Civic centre, you will find the Bilash. An award-winning fine dining restaurant, renowned for its modern and innovative Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine. The family run business boasts many an impressive accolade – including a Michelin rating – and has featured in the Sunday Times’ list of the top 10 restaurants in the Midlands.
West Park
If you need to work off your lunch, grab a bike and a short cycle out of town takes you to West Park. Wolverhampton’s West Park is considered to be one of the best, unspoilt examples of a Victorian park left in England and is Wolverhampton’s premier open space. It’s also home to the Commonwealth Games time trial event in 2022 – so why not do a few laps of the one mile long circumference yourself. Find us at both the North and South entrances.
Banks’s brewery shop and tour
Park up at West Park (South) and you’ll find Wolverhampton’s jewel in the crown – Banks’s. It’s been home to Banks’s (since 1875!), and if you arrive early in the morning you will probably be able to smell the hops wafting through the city. For those beer enthusiasts amongst you can step inside the famous Victorian park brewery in Wolverhampton and take a tour of the brewery, visit the extensive shop and even finish with some samples of their delicious cask ales.
Bantock Park and House
A short cycle from the city centre takes you to Bantock Park and Museum. Park up at Merridale Road and you’ll be able to book a self-guided tour of the house, restored to its Edwardian glory, and set within 43 acres of parkland and surrounded by delightful formal gardens. There’s also a great little café with courtyard seating, a pitch n putt course, children’s play area and beautifully manicured gardens to enjoy. The park regularly hosts events such as outdoor movie screenings, antique fairs and travelling fairgrounds. Due to safety measures, tours of the house are currently only available to book in person on the day.
East Park @wolvesparkies
And from the West to the East, make your way to the docks on Willenhall Road for a ride around the city’s East Park. There are 18 hectares of lovely green space to be explored, with established trees and pathways all just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The park also boasts play areas, a cycle speedway track, baseball courts, tennis courts and football pitches.
Canal network
And how about exploring the city’s canal network with friends? Enjoy a variety of attractive routes with some fascinating wildlife to be seen – most of the city’s towpaths are now surfaced, so no need to worry about the mud. The Wyrley and Essington canal also takes you past New Cross Hospital where there is a dock on Wolverhampton Road, opposite the entrance to the hospital – handy for workers or visitors. From there, it’s just a short walk over to Bentley Bridge for a bit of retail therapy.
